After Hours Craftivism in Red
Thursday, February 26 | 5–7pm | After the shop closes
Join us at Fancywork for an after-hours gathering rooted in craftivism — the long tradition of using handwork as a form of thoughtful, visible protest.
This Thursday marks the 84th anniversary of the day that the now iconic red hand-knit resistance hats worn by Norwegian resisters were outlawed by the Nazis. Now reborn as Melt the ICE hats, these hats were a silent, peaceful protest of Nazi occupation. Today these hats stand for resistance to the illegal actions being undertaken by ICE and CBP agents in the United States and the Trump administration. You can learn more about the history of red hand-knit hats in Norway and the importance of February 26 from The Red Hat Factory.
We’ll gather in the shop to knit the Melt the ICE hat – or any other red hat – this Thursday, February 26 from 5-7pm. Bring a hat already in progress or cast on a new one with us. We have received a restock of red yarn, which is selling very quickly! Yet more red yarn is on the way from various valued vendors. And, red stash yarn is absolutely welcome.
This is a casual, come-as-you-are knit-in — no speeches, no pressure, just shared making with intention. This event centers protest through making. Knit, stitch, and spend time in community as we practice craftivism together.
