Emily's commitment to sustainability doesn't stop at gorgeous colors though. The 100% Merino/Rambouillet wool in each naturally-dyed Wool & Palette skein comes from sheep that are treated responsibly and raised with a progressive approach to land management. This wool comes exclusively from the Shaniko Wool Company farm group, headed by Jeanne Carver, based just around the bend in Maupin, Oregon.
This storied wool is Responsible Wool Standard (RWS) certified, grown, and milled in the United States. RWS certified wool means you can rest assured the fiber you are investing in is ethically and responsibly sourced through a transparent and certified supply chain. The ranches that make up the Shaniko Wool Company farm group reach beyond the highest standards in land management and human & animal welfare standards. All processing of this non-superwash wool is kept as domestic as possible to offset global shipping. These happy sheep produce high-quality wool that is soft enough to wear against your skin at 20-21 microns.
In addition to loads of yummy yarn for you to take home, Emily will be bringing her jars of dye materials to give us a glimpse at what they look like in their raw form. Discover truly magnificent yarn produced with utmost care at every turn – from sheep to plant to skein.
A classic buttoned vest in an all-over cable pattern, Smokeshow is a engaging knit that would be right at home in a library, curled up in a leather chair with your favorite book.
The overall cable pattern is subtle, with a bit of hidden texture, and the button bands are worked in twisted rib for added visual interest. The ribbed hem plays right into the cable pattern, and the overall effect is simple and classic.
Smokeshow is the kind of knit that will get noticed in any outfit you create, but it doesn’t look for the attention.
We welcome Caroline back to Fancywork to lead us through all the twists and turns of this timeless pattern. Due to her extensive experience as one of Thea's test knitters, Caroline is intimately familiar with her pattern writing style, as well as what yarns will best showcase this incredible design.

FAQs
What's a Knitalong (or Crochetalong, or Makealong)?
A knitalong (KAL), Crochetalong (CAL) or Makealong (MAL) is a social event designed to bring the maker community together around a specific pattern or yarn – or sometimes both. Enjoy connecting with others while knitting or crocheting the same garment or working with a particular yarn together. This is a fantastic time to gather together with others in our fiber arts community, enjoy camaraderie, and get a little guidance and project support along the way.
What ISN'T a Knitalong/Crochetalong/Makealong?
A KAL/CAL/MAL is not a class. You should be reasonably familiar with the techniques required to work through the project at hand. However, help is never far away! If you ever find yourself in need of extended project support, drop in to our Help Session, offered weekly on Saturdays from 1-3pm.

MEET ALI: Ali Pate was raised in Punxsutawney, Pa. A very rural environment led to an active childhood with time invested in Girl Scouting and community service. Later, those experiences were utilized at Indiana University of Pennsylvania while studying Fine Arts. Ali earned a BFA in 2003 with a concentration in ceramics. Then, earned an MA in 2007 with a concentration in fibers. Throughout her college experience, she worked at The University Museum, and continued to work at IUP after graduation.
In the later half of 2008, Ali moved to Denver, Colorado. She quickly established a studio and Herd of Cats business. Originally operating as a Fine Arts endeavor, Herd of Cats evolved with Ali’s interests over the years. The works created under Herd of Cats always returned to her foundation studies of ceramics and fiber arts.
In 2018, Herd of Cats took a major twist by including yarn dyeing. Ali applied skills learned in both her BFA and MA degrees to hand dye yarns. During the same time Ali created Road Trip Sock Yarn. She worked to simultaneously build two indie businesses in yarns and fibers, which launched to local shops in 2019. Herd of Cats and Road Trip Sock Yarn developed hand-in-hand. Herd of Cats went on to create Meow Mélange and Pupper Patchwork collections inspired by the fur coats and eye colors of adoptable pets from the local shelter. Monetary donations are made based on sales to help animals during their stay at the shelter.
Road Trip Sock Yarn explores local interests while investigating road trip destinations. A fun and funky play with colors, mega speckles – a term coined by Ali herself – were created within this yarn collection. Just as our experiences are unique as individuals, RTSY emphasizes uniqueness with small batch dyeing at its very best. All colors are extremely limited, and rarely revisited; highlighting local and regional attractions based on each of the destination series.
Today, Ali has launched her “Be Better, Do Better” self-campaign to improve her environmental impacts in the process of yarn dyeing. Her strategies include renewable energy sources, water collection for reuse in dyeing, post-consumer recycled materials for packaging and tags, along with many seemingly minor details to improve environmental footprints throughout the entire process. This self-campaign is being highlighted on social media platforms.
