Buttons were always the better choice for Julie Wilson. She still has the genesis of her collection, treasures gifted from her 3rd grade teacher. The collection grew as she sewed her way through all the years of 4-H sewing lessons and county fairs; experiences which finally culminated into a 30-year career as a professional theatrical costuming technician specializing in the accessories, or Costume Props. Her costuming resume includes the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Seattle Opera and other Seattle venues, the 7-part HBO series “John Adams” (drapery department), gigs at the Arena Theatre and the National Shakespeare Theatre, and the Crafts artisan with Cirque du Soleil’s “O” at the Bellagio in Las Vegas. All the while, instead of having a nice pile of fabric for personal projects, the button collection grew.
In 2012 Julie returned to Oregon retiring from costuming and has kept busy restoring cast iron cookware and now, her rescued vintage buttons. She'll be bringing her gorgeous vintage button collection back to Fancywork Friday through Sunday, January 2-4 for a trunk show you won't want to miss! Give your sweaters and accessories – present and future – a face lift!
This workshop will be led by co-instructors Kecia Kubota and Danni Supplee, both seasoned Cocoknits Sweater Method knitters. And we will be joined by “virtual Julie” at times thanks to her helpful video series. Taught over two, four-hour sessions, January 31 & February 1 from 10am-2pm, this format will allow time to practice techniques and work on the sweater between classes.
We will meet at the Camp Fire Central Oregon offices, located in the Sunlight Solar building: 150 NE Hawthorne Ave., in Bend - just down the street from the shop in the Bend Central District. Coffee, tea and nibbles will be provided. We will take a short break for lunch. Please either bring a brown bag lunch, or take a quick visit to one of the food carts at the Pine Shed, just next door. Early sign-up is suggested as there are a limited number of seats available for the class.
All participants in the workshop should have previously completed at least one sweater. To prepare for the workshop, purchase the Cocoknits Sweater Workshop book. We will be working from the pattern for Emma, which can be knit in many different weights of yarn. Choose yarn and circular needles to match the pattern gauge.
Cocoknits stitch markers will be provided and are yours to keep!
Materials:
- Book: Cocoknits Sweater Workshop by Julie Weisenberger
- Yarn in yardage required to knit your size at the stated gauge. Our sample will be knit in Malabrigo Chunky.
- All appropriate needles for your chosen gauge
- 40” circular needle in the same size as your gauge needle for working Modified Magic Loop (optional)
- DPNs or small-circumference circular needle in US 0-3 (2-3.5mm) range for picking up stitches
- Paper and pencil
- Flexible stitch holders or waste yarn for putting sleeve stitches on hold
- Scrap yarn for practicing techniques (optional)
Homework:
- Make a gauge swatch approximately 5"x 5" square in stockinette stitch with your yarn, getting a gauge of 12 stitches/18 rows over 4 inches per the pattern. Be sure to wash & block your gauge swatch and dry completely prior to measuring.
- Practice the KLL, KRL, PLL and PRL increases. Instructions are included in the back of the Cocoknits Sweater Workshop book. Technique videos can be found on the Cocoknits YouTube channel.
- Have clear knowledge of the long tail cast on method.

FAQs
What's a Knitalong (or Crochetalong, or Makealong)?
A knitalong (KAL), Crochetalong (CAL) or Makealong (MAL) is a social event designed to bring the maker community together around a specific pattern or yarn – or sometimes both. Enjoy connecting with others while knitting or crocheting the same garment or working with a particular yarn together. This is a fantastic time to gather together with others in our fiber arts community, enjoy camaraderie, and get a little guidance and project support along the way.
What ISN'T a Knitalong/Crochetalong/Makealong?
A KAL/CAL/MAL is not a class. You should be reasonably familiar with the techniques required to work through the project at hand. However, help is never far away! If you ever find yourself in need of extended project support, drop in to one of our Help Sessions, offered weekly on Wednesdays & Saturdays from 1-3pm.
Effortless, elegant, and endlessly wearable! The Norma Sweater by Louise Rasmussen of My Favourite Things Knitwear is the perfect blend of timeless design and modern comfort. With its clean lines, gentle drape, and classic ribbed details, Norma is the kind of sweater that looks as good dressed up as it does thrown over jeans for a cozy weekend at home. Its simple silhouette makes it an approachable knit with truly polished results, a staple you’ll want to wear every day.
Join Dedra and Elise for this relaxing, community centered Knitalong as we ease into the new year, one soothing stitch at a time. This is a perfect project for experimenting with yarn combinations: try Knitting for Olive Heavy Merino for soft structure and warmth, or Amano Yarns Riti, a 100% Patagonian merino that feels luxuriously smooth against the skin. For a hint of halo, hold two strands together, a sport or DK with a laceweight mohair, or keep it classic with a single strand of worsted weight yarn.
We’ll gather every other Sunday afternoon in February and March, sharing progress, inspiration, and encouragement as we bring this beautiful sweater to life.
Join us for the Norma KAL: a celebration of timeless design, cozy community, and the joy of making something just for you.
