In Beanie Basics, you'll review the long tail cast on and discover knitting in the round, working with two colors, decreasing, and what to do when the circumference of your work becomes too small for your circular needle. We'll be working with The Conversationalist, by The Plucky Knitter. This is an adorable, wearable, two color hat!
Materials: 2 skeins of Malabrigo Rios in contrasting colors. Suggested needles: US 5 and US 7 circular knitting needles, 16" length or size required to get listed pattern gauge plus one set of double pointed needles in the larger of the two sizes. Stitch markers, scissors and a darning needle.
Prerequisite skills: Casting on, knitting, and purling.
Instructor: Dedra Clark
Class Policies: Be sure to read our general Class Policies before registering.
Cancellation Policy: If you need to cancel or reschedule your registration, please provide at least 24 hours advance notice before the start of your first class for a refund minus a $10 service fee. Cancellations made with less than 24 hours notice are non-refundable.
In this hands on workshop, we'll cover everything you need to get started with lace knitting:
- Lace Basics — Understanding yarn overs, decreases, and how they work together to create beautiful lace patterns
- Reading Lace Charts — Decoding the symbols and learning to follow a chart with confidence
- Lifelines — What they are, why they're your best friend, and how to use them
- Fixing Mistakes — Because they happen to all of us! Learn how to identify and correct errors in your lace without losing your mind
We'll explore all of these skills by knitting a swatch using the Jean Collection wave lace pattern, the same stitch pattern featured in our Sweet Spring KAL: Jean Collection. This makes the workshop a perfect opportunity for KAL participants to get comfortable with the pattern and knock out their swatch at the same time!
Come leave your lace fears at the door. We'll see you on the other side, with a beautiful swatch to show for it!

FAQs
What's a Knitalong (or Crochetalong, or Makealong)?
A knitalong (KAL), Crochetalong (CAL) or Makealong (MAL) is a social event designed to bring the maker community together around a specific pattern or yarn – or sometimes both. Enjoy connecting with others while knitting or crocheting the same garment or working with a particular yarn together. This is a fantastic time to gather together with others in our fiber arts community, enjoy camaraderie, and get a little guidance and project support along the way.
What ISN'T a Knitalong/Crochetalong/Makealong?
A KAL/CAL/MAL is not a class. You should be reasonably familiar with the techniques required to work through the project at hand. However, help is never far away! If you ever find yourself in need of extended project support, drop in to one of our Help Sessions, offered weekly on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 1-3pm.
Knitting has seen a resurgence and is bursting at the seams with fresh, modern designs to knit and wear with pride! Get started on the slow fashion path to creating your own hand knits in this 4-week series geared towards absolute beginners.

SAVE THE DATE!
Local Yarn Store Day is April 25!
Local Yarn Store Day is a national day of celebration honoring that unique and ubiquitously beloved entity, the Local Yarn Store, a place where fiber crafters of all kinds can come together to find inspiration, learn a new skill, get all the yarn, and craft together in community. The above-mentioned are among the things we love about being YOUR local yarn store, but the most cherished of them is the idea of "community."
In addition to celebrating all the things we love about YARN and YARN SHOPS, we are thrilled to continue our support for our Community Giving partner, Hearts Unknown Education (HÙE).
As has become our tradition here at Fancywork, we're once again holding our HÙGE Community Giving Raffle, benefiting HÙE! Loads of sweater quantities of really beautiful yarn, interchangeable needle sets, kits, gifts, and so much more will be raffled off to many lucky winners. 100% of proceeds from raffle ticket sales will be donated to Hearts Unknown Education in support of their programming for Central Oregon youth.
ABOUT HEARTS UNKNOWN EDUCATION
Hearts Unknown Education (HÙE), is a 501(c)(3) non-profit based in Bend that uses the creative arts to offer imaginative experiences in a safe and supportive environment, guiding young people (K-12) who may be struggling emotionally‚ particularly those with anxiety or depression, or who may be having a tough time coping with the state of the world. HÙE's creative wellness programs foster free expression while encouraging youth to explore their inner selves and emotions through art.
Over the past year, Hearts Unknown Education has continued to grow as a vital creative and emotional support space for youth in Central Oregon. What began years ago with just four kids has grown into a thriving community serving nearly 200 youth each week. As HÙE has expanded, so has its role as a trusted place for connection, belonging, and early mental health support. Through free access to art, creative programming, mentorship, and community, HÙE is helping meet a growing need for prevention-focused support before challenges escalate into crisis.
A major focus this year has been the strengthening of HÙE’s mental health initiative. We are currently able to offer limited therapy support through the generosity of local therapists who have donated their time and expertise, allowing youth and families to access care at no cost. Building on that foundation, HÙE is now working to formalize a partnership with the Oregon State University – Cascades Master of Counseling program to host therapists-in-training within our space. This next step would significantly expand access to supervised, prevention-focused counseling while also helping develop the future mental health workforce in our region.
This progress has been made possible by a growing circle of community support. Over the past year, HÙE has welcomed meaningful new donor investment from partners including CORA and St. Charles, while also deepening relationships with community-minded businesses such as Spork, Dogwood, Deschutes Brewery, and Market of Choice. Their support reflects a broader recognition that HÙE is filling an important gap for youth and families in Central Oregon. Together, these partnerships are helping HÙE build not only a creative refuge, but also a sustainable model for community-based mental health support.
Mark your calendars for a day at your LYS that you won't want to to miss!
