Knitting has seen a resurgence and is bursting at the seams with fresh, modern designs to knit and wear with pride! Get started on the slow fashion path to creating your own hand knits in this 4-week series geared towards absolute beginners. 

Whether you’ve never picked up needles before or you’ve dabbled in the past and are in need of a refresher, this class will give you a solid foundation of the fundamentals of knitting. We’ll cover key topics including casting on, binding off, the knit and the purl stitch, plus how to reading a simple pattern, and unknitting and picking up dropped stitches so you’re able to fix mistakes when they happen (and they happen to the best of us). There will also be a short discussion on gauge and how to find patterns.

In Beanie Basics, you'll review the long tail cast on and discover knitting in the round, working with two colors, decreasing, and what to do when the circumference of your work becomes too small for your circular needle. We'll be working with The Conversationalist, by The Plucky Knitter. This is an adorable, wearable, two color hat!

Materials: 2 skeins of Malabrigo Rios in contrasting colors. Suggested needles: US 5 and US 7 circular knitting needles, 16" length or size required to get listed pattern gauge plus one set of double pointed needles in the larger of the two sizes. Stitch markers, scissors and a darning needle.

Join our all-star knitting instructor, Dedra, as she walks you through every detail of making your very own sweater. At the end of this class, you'll have a very cute, very sporty pullover that you'll proudly wear everywhere! Class meets five times over the course of seven weeks to knit Varsity Sweater by Lamb & Kid Designs.

Class 1: Starting out right! In this first class, we'll cover the all-important gauge swatch - how to do it right and what to do if you're not getting gauge. We will also discuss different types of sweater construction, top down, bottom up, cardigans and pullovers. 

Class 2: All about the yoke. We'll learn how to use short rows to shape the neckline for elegance and a comfortable fit and, at the same time, we'll be working those raglan sleeve increases.

Class 3: Getting to the meat of it. This week we'll tackle the sleeves and body of the sweater. Once your sleeve stitches are secured, cables are adjusted and a few rows are under your belt, it's smooth sailing from here! We'll send you off on a two-week break to knit, knit, knit on your own with the goal of coming back with a completed, bound off sweater body.

Class 4: School's back in session! We'll gather together again and jump in on those sleeves, learning how to shape them, along with strategies for making them the perfect length.

Class 5: Graduation Day! We will finish our sweaters strong and celebrate the big win! We'll talk about finishing techniques and how to care for your handmade heirloom. 

Congratulations, you've graduated to Sweater Knitter!

Materials: 905-1648 yards of worsted weight yarn, such as Amano Yarns' Riti depending on the size you choose to knit. (Don't worry, we're happy help you determine yardage.) *Approx. 20 yards of contrasting worsted weight yarn for each sleeve stripe. Suggested needle sizes: US 7 circular knitting needles in 16" and 24-32" length. US 5 circular knitting needles in 16" and 32" lengths, or sizes required to get listed pattern gauge. Darning needle, 4 stitch markers, including a unique one for BOR, and a pair of scissors. 

We’ll start with a breakdown of brioche basics, including how the stitch pattern works, tips for managing tension, and how to handle yarn placement in two colors. You’ll cast on for your cowl in class and begin working through the pattern with guidance and support.

As the class progresses, we’ll dive deeper into the nuances of brioche, including how to  troubleshoot common issues and reading your stitches to keep track of where you are. Along the way, you’ll gain confidence and a deeper understanding of how brioche fabric is built. By the end of the class, you'll not only have a great start on your favorite squishy, cozy cowl, but also the foundational skills to tackle future brioche projects with ease and enthusiasm.

Materials: Two contrasting skeins of bulky-weight yarn, such as Malabrigo Chunky or Vientos. Suggested needle sizes: 16" US 11 circular knitting needles, darning needle, stitch markers, including a unique one for BOR, and a pair of scissors and the pattern. 

Is it any wonder that a strong trend in knitwear patterns these days involves yarn with considerable fluff? Given the uncertainty in nearly every facet of life, the extra cuddly softness afforded both the maker and the wearer of the final piece makes yarns blended with fibers like suri alpaca and mohair all the more enticing. As we transition the seasons, let's gather together in craft with a Fluff-Along!

Choose a pattern that soothes your fashion spirit and pair it with a fluffy yarn to bring peace and calmness to your heart. Some of our favorite fluff yarns include Tumalo Fiber's Swanky Floof, Fiber MacGyver's Suri Silk, and Knitting for Olive's Soft Silk Mohair. If your project is asking for extra warmth to go with that fluff, look no further than Hélène Magnusson's hand-selected Icelandic Lambswool, found in her Love Story and Gilitrutt yarns.

While this Knit-Along (KAL) is open to any pattern using a fluff yarn, each Fancywork staffer has picked one for your consideration. Abby is eyeing the Bubblegum Sweater by Charlotte Sometime. Alison likes the simplicity and timelessness of PetiteKnit's Cloud Blouse. Dedra plans to cast on Andrea Mowry's Nebula. She'll be so cute with her overalls in this one! Elise is eager to knit an interpretation of her beloved Lake Michigan in the Idaho Sunset sweater by Caitlin Turowski. Emily's choice of the Theo Sweater by kolibri by johanna is fitting for her artistic fashion style. Kecia is casting on Instant Crush—an all-over colorwork cuddle fest. And we've got two suggestions designed by Tanja Koenigs. Maricela will rock the Feiya V Cardigan while our guest host for this KAL, Kate, will be looking trés chic in the AVA V Cardigan.

Designed specifically for knitters who are comfortable with the basics of two-color brioche—either in the round or flat—this next-step class provides guided, step-by-step practice while working through Lavanya Patricella's intricate and stylish Doe Ears Headband. By the end of class, you’ll have the skills and confidence needed to tackle advanced brioche designs with ease!

Materials: Two contrasting skeins of DK-weight yarn, such as North Bay Fibers Bayhouse DK, Fiber MacGyver Shaniko DK or Amano Yarns Riti Light. Suggested needle sizes: 16" US 3 circular knitting needles, darning needle, stitch markers, including a unique one for BOR, and a pair of scissors and the pattern. 

Your takeaways from this two-week class will include a solid understanding of the fundamentals of stranded colorwork knitting, chart reading skills you can apply to any colorwork project, practical strategies for tracking your place in a pattern repeat, and hands-on experience managing multiple yarns — all of which will set you up for technicolor success!

Together we'll work through instructor Dedra Clark's own design, The Brave Little Cowl, a clever pattern that sets the stage for a "Choose Your Own Adventure" approach to learning. Take this class, knit the cowl and wear it pride, as it. Or, continue your colorwork journey with our follow-up Steeking class, in which your finished cowl becomes the canvas for learning to cut open your work and transform it magically. Steek once and add a button band and–voilà–your cowl becomes a stylish buttoned neck warmer. Or cut it four times for extra steeking practice, add a border around each square, and you'll have a set of adorable coasters upon which to place your well-deserved drink.

Materials: Two high contrast skeins of sticky worsted-weight yarn. We recommend Knitting for Olive Heavy Merino. 24" US 7 circular knitting needle, and stitch markers.

Prerequisites: Students should have a solid understanding of knit and purl stitches and be comfortable knitting in the round.

Bring your crochet projects and join us and other crocheters at Fancywork Yarn Shop every Thursday from 1-3pm. This 2-hour hook session is designed specifically to foster community among the crochet crew. All skill levels are welcome in this weekly drop-in event. No need to reserve a spot ahead of time. Just join us in the shop. We can't wait to see what you're working on!
