Cabled Cardigan KAL with Special Guest Kate Oates

Join Fancywork for a Cardigan Knit-along with our special guest, designer Kate Oates as she guides us through the ins and outs of fit and choosing a size for her Jana or Karel cardigans!

Future You will be grateful that you got a jump on your cool weather wear. Although with the elusive onset of spring this year, Future You certainly won’t need to wait long. We’re casting on a new knit-along with your choice of cabled masterpieces, both designed by Kate Oates: Jana or Karel Cardigan. Each pattern features the same classically modern cable pattern, plus ever-so-useful pockets, but they differ in length. Short or long – whichever you prefer – this cardigan will be the sweater you reach for day in and day out for years to come!

Kate will join us via Zoom for our first gathering on April 2nd to talk about fit and choosing a size for your Jana or Karel.

We’ve got three suggestions for wool to work this project with, and ample supply in stock for each. Hudson + West Co. Forge is 70% Merino, 30% Corriedale, grown, spun, and dyed entirely in the United States. This 3-ply, worsted-weight yarn is plump, luscious, and oh, so soft. It has a beautiful balance of stitch definition, bounce, and woolly, cohesive bloom to make those cable really pop.

Or keep it local! Tumalo Fiber Co.’s Cline Butte,  from their new American Made Series, would truly sing here. Targhee wool’s makeup of three-quarters finewool and one-quarter longwool gives it a magnificent high crimp and next-to-skin softness. Equally suitable though would be Tumalo Fiber Co. Awbrey Butte, a washable merino that will hold its shape while ensuring easy care.

Our Knit-along kicks off Sunday, April 2, from 3:30-5:00pm at the shop and online. We’ll meet every other Sunday for three weeks and then again on May 7 for our last gathering, so you’ll have plenty of time to finish your make in time for Mother’s Day.

In addition to yarn and needles for your chosen cardigan, you’ll need to bring the following for the April 2 workshop with Kate:

• Pencil & paper
• Calculator (or your phone)
• Jana or Karel Cardigan pattern (specifically, the schematic)
• Scrap yarn (any gauge will so, it’s for taking self-measurements)
• A piece of cardboard (letter sized or slightly larger, again it is a measuring tool!)

About Kate Oates:

Kate Oates is a knitting pattern designer and author with almost 300 individual designs and several books: Grown, Knits for Boys and Knitting Clothes Kids Love. Under her own name, she creates a line of modern and stylish knits for adults. Her other line, Tot Toppers, features whimsically wearable garments and accessories for babies and children. Kate is known for her attention to detail & fit, extensive size ranges and providing a multitude of options within her patterns. You can find her patterns at local yarn stores as well as online. She also does freelance work for a variety of publications and yarn companies.

In her non-knitting life, Kate holds a PhD in political science from the University of Florida. She lives with her family in South Carolina, which includes husband Ryan and boys Jesse, Charlie, Oliver & Eliot (4 very handsome tot toppers models).
